The 15-Minute Subscription Audit: Find Your Own Forgotten Money

Target keyword: subscription audit spreadsheet

Meta description: Run a 15-minute subscription audit: list every recurring charge, score each one on cost and actual use, cancel the failures, and add up your annual savings — with a free renewal calendar.

Reading time: ~7 minutes

With streaming services, apps, and memberships raising prices again, the average household's stack of recurring charges keeps growing — and the ones you forgot about are the most expensive kind. Not because any single charge is huge, but because nobody re-decides them. A $14.99/month app you opened twice last year quietly costs $180 a year, and nobody ever asks whether you'd pay it again.

A subscription audit is the fix, and it takes about fifteen minutes. The method is simple: list every recurring charge, score each one on what it costs and how much you actually use it, cancel the failures, and add up what you just saved yourself. Then put every remaining subscription on a renewal calendar so free trials and annual renewals never convert unnoticed again.

Step 1: List everything that charges you on a schedule

Start with your last 60 days of statements — checking account, each credit card. Flag every recurring charge: streaming, apps, cloud storage, gyms, boxes, memberships, domain names, news paywalls. Don't trust your memory; trust the statements. Most people find at least one charge they genuinely forgot existed.

For each one, write down four things: the name, the cost, the billing frequency (monthly or annual), and the next renewal date. That last column is the one that pays for itself — knowing a $120 annual renewal hits next Tuesday is the difference between canceling and paying.

Step 2: Score each subscription on cost and actual use

Now the honest part. For each subscription, answer two questions:

  1. How much does it cost per year? (Monthly × 12. Annuals count as-is. This is the number your brain avoids computing.)
  2. How much do you actually use it? Not how much you intend to use it, not how much you used it in January — how much you used it in the last 30 days.

Then rate each one: keep, watch, or cancel. The rule of thumb: if the annual cost divided by your actual usage makes you wince, cancel it. You can always re-subscribe later — nothing on the internet is going out of stock. Subscriptions are the only "purchase" where the default is to keep paying forever; the audit resets every line item back to an active decision.

Step 3: Cancel the failures and bank the savings

Cancel everything rated "cancel." Immediately, not "later this week." Most services let you cancel online in a few minutes; the ones that make you call or chat are advertising exactly how much they rely on your inertia.

Now add up the annual cost of everything you canceled. That's your audit savings — real money, found in fifteen minutes, that repeats every year you keep the cancellations canceled. A typical audit finds $200–500 a year in charges the owner barely uses. (That's a sample range from common audit outcomes, not a promise about your stack.) The Subscription Audit Tracker runs this exact audit in a spreadsheet — list, score, and calendar every subscription.

Step 4: Put the keepers on a renewal calendar

The audit fails long-term if the "keep" list drifts back into autopilot. For every subscription you keep, record the renewal date and set a reminder a week before it. Free trials get the same treatment: the moment you start a trial, add its cancellation date. A trial that converts to a paid plan you didn't re-decide is just a subscription you didn't audit. And once the calendar is set, put the found money to work — see your debt-free date with the free calculator.
